U.S. Open 2025: Rory McIlroy leaves Oakmont with this U.S. Open record

Even during a frustrating week, Rory McIlroy managed to make more golf history.
The five-time major champ was never in contention at the U.S. Open, needing a closing birdie on Friday at Oakmont just to make the cut. But the reigning Masters champ finally found some good form on Sunday with a final-round 67.
The scored moved McIlroy up the leaderboard by 20 spots at the time of signing his card. And it also gave him a U.S. Open record—albeit one that he might not even know about.
But stats guru Justin Ray was all over it. The head of content for Twenty First Group pointed out that McIlroy now has more career rounds of 67 or better at the U.S. Open than anyone else.
Again, not the week that the 2011 U.S. Open champ was hoping for, but it's another feather in McIlroy's Nike cap. Ray added this nugget about McIlroy's overall number of low scores in major championships—and it's an even more impressive list.
And now McIlroy turns his attention to the year's final major, the Open Championship, which will be held at Royal Portrush in his native Northern Ireland. And where he'll try to add to his impressive total of low scores in majors.
"Look, it will be amazing to go home and play in that atmosphere and see a lot of people that I still haven't seen yet," McIlroy said. "I am, I'm really looking forward to it. It was nice to end this week with a bit of a positive note with the way I played today, and yeah, I'll just be looking forward to and trying to get myself prepared for Portrush."
