U.S. Open 2024: Grandstand seats are reportedly collapsing on fans at Pinehurst due to construction error

It just wouldn’t be a U.S. Open without drama. Complaints about the setup being unfair. Big names getting beat by high-school science teachers in qualifiers. Worldwide pandemics, world ranking points and Phil hitting moving balls. If you can dream it up, the U.S. Open has delivered it. This, however, is a new one.
According to multiple reports from the grounds this week, grandstand seating around Pinehurst No. 2 has been collapsing on fans this week after the construction company used screws that were too short in an effort to cut costs. No Laying Up’s Tron Carter has the scoop.
Buckle up, folks (literally). It’s not even Wednesday yet and we already have fans falling out of their chairs and last year’s U.S. Open champ calling the greens “borderline.” Apparently, the situation got so slapstick, event organizers had to close the entire grandstand near the second hole for repairs. That has to be a U.S. Open first.

Needless to say, we hope everyone’s tailbones survive unbruised and the course setup holds better than the seats, otherwise it’s going to be carnage out there.
