U.S. Open 2020: An Interactive Look At New York's Depth Of Great Golf Courses
For decades, golfers have debated which corner of the world boasts the strongest concentration of great golf. Areas of the United Kingdom and Ireland make strong cases. So do the Monterey Peninsula and big cities like Philadelphia, Chicago or Los Angeles. But the depth of fantastic golf courses in the New York City area make it an argument-ender for some.
The Big Apple will be the center of the golf universe with the U.S. Open being hosted by Winged Foot Golf Club, and to illustrate how much great golf can be found close to the host site, we mapped out some of the top choices for golf in close proximity. Scroll down for our interactive experience.

The famed West course hosted its sixth U.S. Open in 2020 and will return in 2028. It was lengthened by 213 yards since the ’06 U.S. Open and played as a 7,477-yard par 70 in 2020.

Old Oaks is another Tillinghast design in the golf-rich city of Purchase (which also boasts a nine-hole Seth Raynor design (Blind Brook); Brae Burn Country Club; and Golf Club of Purchase, all best in New York contenders).
Tom Fazio dynamited more than 130,000 cubic feet of rock on this dramatic site with views down the Hudson River. Hudson National has been ranked on our 100 Greatest since 2005.
The club hosted the 1935 Ryder Cup and 1974 U.S. Amateur, in addition to four FedEx Cup events and the ‘90 U.S. Senior Open and 2001 Senior PGA. The 27-hole facility also boasts a Clifford Wendehack clubhouse and golf by A.W. Tillinghast, same as Winged Foot.
This Macdonald/Raynor design was renovated by Gil Hanse in recent years. The club made its debut in our national rankings in 2013-2014 and has been ranked ever since.
