Tyrrell Hatton gets robbed of ace by flagstick, pretends to javelin throw it, continues being Tyrrell

September 15, 2023

Tyrrell Hatton is one of the most entertaining characters in golf. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a not-so-good way, but there’s no denying that the sport could use more pros with his candor on the course and at the podium.

On Friday at the BMW PGA Championship, Hatton nearly aced one of Wentworth West Course’s four par 3s. Instead of glory, however, Hatton got gristle when his ball struck the flagstick, leaving him with a four-foot tester for birdie. Fans held their breath wondering which Tyrrell they would see as he approached the green. To the relief of everyone, it was funny Tyrrell, who jokingly removed the flagstick and pretend to javelin throw it through the ozone layer. Check it out.

You had us going there for a minute, bud. There’s no doubt that deep down Hatton really wanted snap that thing over his knee and use it for kindling, but that fact he didn’t—and gave us a laugh along the way—is what counts on the scorecard.

Does this mean we’ll see a kinder, softer Hatton at the Ryder Cup in Rome later this month? Sorry U.S. fans. Don’t bet on it.
