Former Masters champ daggers Jason Day’s controversial Pebble Beach groutfit after hole-out eagle

Just last year, Vogue published a treatise on embracing the groutfit (otherwise known as an all-gray outfit). The controversial look can be sultry yet subdued, prep-school chic or even have a bit of slouchy suiting. With all these looks, the fashion leader says that the groutfit is “more than a boring boardroom staple.” Apparently, though, no one told that to Masters champ (and fashion expert?) Trevor Immelman.
The golf great and CBS commentator did not seem to be a fan of Jason Day’s newest controversial Malbon look at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a full, monochrome sweatsuit featuring baggy sweatpants and a gray Motive hat for good measure that the Aussie wore during Sunday's final round. It was, umm, the talk of the town, with Immelman calling Day out even after holing out for eagle from a bunker on the 14th hole.
Despite the incredible shot, Immelman had to address the look, asking, “Did he lose his luggage?” This must’ve gotten back to J-Day as he went on to caption his Insta groutfit photo “Lost my luggage 🤷🏽♂️ #teammalbon.” Day finished the *ahem* day with a three-under 69, jumping all the way up to a T-13 at Pebble Beach for a nifty $368,500. Think about how many sweatsuits you can buy with that cash!
Day has become just as interesting for what he wears as how he plays, frequently showing off his unconventional style and turning heads with his more out-there outfits. After an equally unusual look at Torrey Pines, Malbon founder Stephen Malbon had this to say, “We actually didn't script him this week. Guy's a legend. What he's worn all week is part of his personal collection of Malbon gear, so he dressed himself, and I think he did it quite well."

One of the craziest parts of this entire saga is that Day would’ve been kicked out of Pebble Beach if he wasn’t Jason Day teeing off in a PGA Tour event. The FAQ section on Pebble Beach’s website makes sure to note that golfers cannot wear sweats. The course's dress code reads as follows:
“At all golf facilities except The Hay, which has no firm dress code, guests are asked to wear a golf shirt and equivalent outerwear. Both shorts and pants are welcome, so long as they are not denim, cargo or sweats.”
Jason Day is doing his own thing and constantly creating headlines like this one, keeping Malbon at the top of golfers’ minds. That’s what a brand ambassador is for. We have no doubt Day would be allowed to tee off at Pebble Beach no matter what he's wearing, but for the rest of you mortals, don’t try to don a groutfit at the famed California course. It won’t just be Trevor Immelman making fun of you. It’ll be everyone on the property.
