"Chuck it on Rory’s tab": Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy treat media to pizza and beer after world-class aces

Chris Graythen
Yesterday was a great day to be Rory McIlroy or Shane Lowry—hitting dynamite aces on Spyglass Hill’s No. 15 and Pebble Beach’s No. 7—it was just as fun to be a media member coasting off of the major winners’ success. Although it’s tradition for the media on-site to receive beers after a hole-in-one, things went a little bit further at the famed AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and a real journalist never turns down a free meal. That’s J-School 101.
Gabby Herzig of The Athletic took fans behind the curtain in the tournament's media room, revealing the Guinness (for more refined palettes), Bud Lights (for those counting calories) and Amstel Lights (for the absolute sickos and deviants) that McIlroy and Lowry treated the press to after their holes-in-one. They also provided “super gourmet and delicious” pizza to go with the brews. We hope the pros got a slice after the journalists attacked.
“The media thanks you guys for being good at golf,” Herzig wrote to which Lowry tagged McIlroy and posted, “A couple of cold ones ☝🏻☝🏻” Lowry also made sure to throw his fellow Irishman under the bus just for good measure posting, “Chuck it on Rory’s tab," he tweeted.
Lowry was in an extra-special mood after adding to the most insane list of holes-in-one ever recorded. We’d put these three up against any other collection out there: 17th at TPC Sawgrass, 16th at Augusta National and 7th at Pebble Beach. This tweet from our very own Christopher Powers accurately sums it up.
With pro golf at a crossroads, this is a beautiful way to bring everyone together and remind us all of what’s important: Memorable aces, good pizza and a cold one at the end of the day. That’s what it’s all about and it’s fitting that it took the gorgeous and proud nation of Ireland to remind us why we love this sport.
