ESPN to air Tiger Woods documentary over Thanksgiving weekend

Tiger Woods will not be competing in the latest iteration of “The Match” on Thanksgiving weekend. But fans will still be able to get their fill of the 15-time major winner over the holidays.
ESPN announced Thursday that its Undefeated vertical will be releasing a one-hour documentary on Woods to air Nov. 29. Titled “Tiger Woods: America’s Son,” the film will, according to the network, explore “how Woods’ historic win at the Masters in 1997—becoming the first African-American golfer to win a major tournament—influenced perceptions of the golfer across racial and ethnic lines.” The documentary also will explore racial identity and the meaning of Woods’ success in America.
“Throughout this hour we hope that viewers see Tiger Woods in a new light and be challenged to think about what it is that makes him uniquely American,” said Craig Lazarus, vice president of content and features for ESPN, in a press release. “In many ways, Tiger’s story shows us that there is no single experience in America.”
According to the network, the documentary will use rarely seen footage from Woods’ early career and life, including interviews of a young Tiger and his parents. Additional interviews come from the likes of Black pioneer Lee Elder, Woods' former coach Butch Harmon, and former player and NBC Sports analyst Paul Azinger.
The project is helmed by Lauren Stowell, who has previously won Sports Emmy Awards for both Outstanding Long Feature and Outstanding Short Documentary. The documentary will air on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. on ESPN and the ESPN App.
