When You're Hot, You're Hot

Shane Bacon caps three straight birdies with hole-in-one at Connecticut Mid-Amateur

August 30, 2023

These guys are good. No, not those guys. The other guys. The ones in the booth and behind the microphones. While they pay rent by analyzing the play of professional golfers, they are, by and large, damn good sticks themselves. Take Shane Bacon for instance. The industry vet, who was worked everywhere from Golf Channel to Fox and currently hosts his own podcast 'Get a Grip,' has maintained a +2.5 handicap for years, qualified for a U.S. Open sectional back in 2019 and even played in his first U.S. Amateur this summer at age 39.

On Tuesday, however, Bacon enjoyed perhaps his finest competitive golf experience yet when he aced the Country Club of Farmington’s par-3 12th hole while playing in the 36th Connecticut Mid-Amateur.

The ace was just Bacon’s second ever and couldn’t have come at a better time during his opening round. The lefty was three-over heading to the ninth tee. After birdieing 9, 10, and 11, Bacon arrived at the 109-yard 12th scorching hot. The rest, as they say, is history.

Bacon shot even par the rest of the way, ending the day with a two-under round of 69, good for T-4 heading into Wednesday’s second and final round.
