The Grind

Scottie Scheffler’s all-time dad moment, Bryson DeChambeau’s White House wedge display and a standup comedian helps win a major

June 03, 2025

Welcome to another edition of The Grind, where we only have one more day to feel special about getting to see the entire first season of “Stick” before everyone else. The Apple TV+ new series starring Owen Wilson is golf’s answer to “Ted Lasso”—and I really enjoyed it.

Oh, and I really enjoyed talking to Owen for this Golf Digest story. I recommend golf fans—and non-golf fans—give it a try. And I’m happy to see our great sport continue to get more light shined upon it whether it’s “Stick” or “Happy Gilmore 2” or “Full Swing.” As “Zoolander’s” Mugatu (played by Will Ferrell) would say like he said about Owen Wilson’s Hansel character: “Golf. So hot right now. Golf.” Anyway, here’s what else is going on in the game.

WE’RE BUYING

Scottie Scheffler: This is getting ridiculous again. The guy wins every week! In dominant fashion! This time, it was Scheffler claiming the Memorial Tournament by four shots to join Tiger Woods as the only golfers to successfully defend their title at Jack Nicklaus’ event. That’s right, not even Jack Nicklaus has done this:

How good has Scottie been since that early-season “slump”? Look at how he compares to the Colorado Rockies over the past month:

Incredible. Of course, the Rockies are one of the biggest embarrassments in the history of sports, but that’s still incredible. Still, as Scheffler’s legend continues to grow, he continues to stay grounded thanks to moments like this:

Hope Jack’s place has some baby-friendly bathrooms. Either way, that cute little outfit probably had to go in the trash Sunday night.

Maja Stark: What a performance by the 25-year-old Swede at the U.S. Women's Open at Erin Hills. Although, every time I saw her last name on Sunday it got me thinking of my guy John Starks. Which got me thinking about my Knicks losing to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Sigh. But back to STARK, she looked completely cool holding off World No. 1 Nelly Korda and Rio Takeda by two shots, literally laughing her way to a maiden major title.

But it turns out, there’s a great explanation for that as her caddie, Jeff Brighton, is a former standup comedian, and he has “some good jokes.” Here’s a look at his LinkedIn profile:

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/250603-grind-linkedin-caddie.png

If the guy could keep Maja laughing under the most pressure she’s ever faced, he must have some serious comedic chops. Anyway, Jeff got a nice chunk of Maja’s $2.4 million payday, which must be the best-paying gig he’s ever had. So, if there are any struggling standups out there, you might want to think about getting into caddieing.

Ben Griffin: After winning his first solo PGA Tour title the previous week at Colonial Country Club, Griffin nearly added another victory at Muirfield Village. And he did it by playing the World No. 1 heads up on Sunday at Jack’s place.

You gotta love this guy’s grit. And with the runner-up moving him up to No. 7 in the Team USA Ryder Cup standings, it looks like it’s time to start getting him fit for some red, white and blue Ralph Lauren gear for September.

Charlie Woods: The initial craze over Charlie’s golf game while playing with Tiger in the PNC Championship was a bit much (Yes, we got as excited as anyone), but the criticism in years since had swung too much the other way. And now the 16-year-old has a true, individual breakthrough performance to point to. Woods won his first AJGA title at Streamsong, shooting 15 under and beating a stacked field of junior golfers, including Miles Russell, one of the top golf prospects in decades:

No, this doesn’t mean he’s the next Tiger. No one’s saying that. But Charlie is clearly a darn good player in his own right, and it’s going to be fun to see where he goes next now that he can start officially talking to colleges later this month. Just a suggestion, Charlie, but there’s a great school in Winston-Salem, N.C., with a historic golf program. Just saying.

WE’RE SELLING

People knocking Erin Hills: The 2017 U.S. Open at this sprawling Wisconsin track wound up having a very un-U.S. Open-like winning score of 16 under par. And so the critics (I was probably one as well) piled on. Meanwhile, it produced a top five of winner Brooks Koepka, Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler. Decent leaderboard!

Oh, and also tied for fifth was my Wake Forest classmate, Bill Haas. Just another in a long line of terrific Demon Deacons on the golf circuit. (Just saying, Charlie.) Anyway, Erin Hills looked awesome on TV. And I hope to get there for real someday even if the men’s U.S. Open never goes back.

Standing in this spot: I don’t care how many majors a golfer has won. Standing here while another person hits a rock-hard golf ball well over 100 miles per hour is insane.

And it gets even crazier when you see this terrifying POV video:

Thankfully, no one got hurt. This time.

Sandbaggers: They’re everywhere, and they really come out during member-guest season. Or during the annual Golf Digest Match Play Championship … kidding! (Sort of.) Anyway, apparently one club has come up with an interesting way to try to combat these scoring shenanigans:

Sad that it has to come to that, but that seems like a solid idea.

ON TAP

The PGA Tour season continues with the RBC Canadian Open, AKA that one where Tiger hit such a famous fairway bunker shot that Johnson Wagner recreated it 25 years later. Just like 25 years after last making the Eastern Conference Finals and losing in six games to the Indiana Pacers, the Knicks did the exact same thing. Sigh again. Although the tournament will be played at TPC Toronto for the first time and not at Glen Abbey so we won’t see anyone in that same spot on the final hole. Also, LIV is in Virginia at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, and the women are at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. Shout-out to the Thornwood ShopRite bakery where we order the kids’ birthday cakes. They do a nice job there.

Random tournament fact: The only pro-am I’ve ever completed (there was also the three holes I got to play with Hideki Matsuyama once) came a decade ago at the ShopRite when I played with Jing Yan and won a closest-to-the-pin for a Callaway gift card. Good times. Although, I think I waited too long to use it and it expired. I wish I could have banked away some ShopRite bakery credit instead.

RANDOM PROP BETS OF THE WEEK

—Harold Varner III will win again in Virginia: 65-to-1 odds

—Robert MacIntyre will win again in Canada: 28-to-1 odds

—Neither will hit a shot as memorable as Tiger’s in 2000: LOCK

TWEET OF THE WEEK

Perfect. And I’d buy that!

TWEET OF THE WEEK (CLUB PRO GUY DIVISION)

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

This had Golf Twitter abuzz and led to Lexi Thompson addressing the pace-of-play situation on Instagram. Long story short, Charley Hull is NOT very patient when it comes to slow play.

VIRAL VIDEO(S) OF THE WEEK

In addition to helping Scottie Scheffler to another win, Ted Scott had himself a week. First, this video of him responding to a fan at the range went viral:

And then this video of him doing a celebratory dance in the Muirfield Village locker room went even more viral:

Again, calling all standups to enter the caddieing business.

VIRAL VIDEO OF THE WEEK (NON-TED SCOTT DIVISION)

OK, so if I do ever make it to Erin Hills, I'm going to try to avoid spots like that.

THIS WEEK IN PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION

Let’s show a Scheffler family photo in which you can’t see Bennett’s poop stain:

We’ve got your back, Bennett. Or, in this case, not your actual back.

THIS WEEK IN CELEBRITY GOLFERS

Peyton Manning drilled a house with a wayward tee shot during the Memorial pro-am:

The guy is not quite as accurate with a golf ball as he was with a football.

THIS WEEK IN BRYSON BEING BRYSON

With LIV Golf going to Virginia this week, Bryson DeChambeau made a stop at the White House. And put on a wedge display on the South Lawn (NBD):

Talk about pressure. You hit a shank there and you could start World War III. Then again, if anyone can handle that it’s the guy who made a hole-in-one by hitting golf balls over his house.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“He is a video-game golfer, but video-game golfers can be beat.” —Ben Griffin. It didn’t work out that way for Ben on Sunday, but I love the quote and love the confidence.

THIS AND THAT

Congrats to James Nicholas on being medalist at the U.S. Open final qualifying at Canoe Brook Check out our full coverage of “Golf’s Longest Day” here and check out James' fantastic interview after:

James' dad, Dr. Stephen Nicholas, is my orthopedic, so it’s been a busy year-plus for them both. … Amari Avery had to borrow Gabriela Ruffels’ clubs for the second round of the U.S. Women’s Open after her boyfriend took Avery's home by accident (both have the same USC travel bag) and she shot 73 to make the cut. Amazingly, her boyfriend made the cut as well and the two are still a couple. … And, finally, a few years back, I got pitched to do a story on someone who had made a (loosely) Masters-inspired song. That musician (and celebrity golfer) turned out to be Ben Rector (He also wrote a Rory-inspired song last year) and he’s turned out to be one of my favorite artists. And now he has a new album out—and it’s awesome:
