It appears the marriage between Patrick Reed and PXG is over.

In January at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Reed ended his long-standing equipment free agency by signing with the Scottsdale-based manufacturer. “PXG is such a natural fit for me,” Reed said earlier this year. “I love the message they send and the brand they have built, and that takes a great team. I’m so excited to be a part of the PXG Troops and for what is to come. Safe to say, I’m very excited about this year.”

But Reed proceeded to post just one top-25 finish in a full-field event in 2022, and less than six months later sources have confirmed to Golf Digest that PXG has parted ways with Reed ahead of his debut on the LIV Golf series this week.

A source told Golf Digest the decision was not tied to Reed’s exodus and soon-to-come suspension from the PGA Tour.

The news is not necessarily a surprise. Reed had substituted the PXG driver for a big stick from Grindworks at the Memorial and the U.S. Open, and had stopped wearing a PXG hat after the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Reed had been an equipment free agent for several years and has used that freedom to play whatever he wanted perhaps more freely than any other player, having used gear from multiple companies, including PXG. That included 2018, when Reed won the Masters without a single equipment partnership. Reed also has used gear from non-mainstream companies such as wedges from Artisan Golf and irons from Grindworks.

Reed enters the week ranked No. 39 on the Official World Golf Ranking, his worst standing since 2014.
