Phil Mickelson stripes drive at Safeway Open, hilariously mocks himself afterwards
Last season, Phil Mickelson ranked 162nd on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy percentage. Anyone who watches the five-time major champion on a regular basis knows finding fairways off the tee is not one of his strong suits, and he'd be the first to tell you that.
So far this week at the Safeway Open, the 2017-'18 PGA Tour season-opening event, it's been more of the same for Mickelson, hitting just 15 of 56 fairways at Silverado Resort and Spa's North Course in Napa, Calif. Somehow, he kept himself in the hunt deep into the final round, getting within a shot of the lead with three holes to play thanks to a field-leading 22 birdies. At the par-5 15th, Mickelson striped a drive, one that landed in the short grass for his 15th and final fairway in regulation of the week. In classic Phil fashion, he hilariously mocked himself afterwards. Check it out:
Just absolute peak Phil here. Is there anyway he can play on the PGA Tour forever?
He ended up capitalizing on the drive with a birdie, but dropped a shot at the next hole. He didn't grab his 43rd career victory, but Mickelson made the Safeway Open must-see TV for a few hours late on a fall Sunday, which is pretty impressive.
