PGA Championship 2020: Brooks Koepka’s hat is inspired by a San Francisco hallmark

Brooks Koepka’s hat and Tony Finau’s golf shirt may look similar, but designers took inspiration from very different parts of the Bay Area

August 06, 2020

While the majors might look a little different this year, there is one thing we can count on—Brooks Koepka showing up with a unique golf hat that generates some chatter. The four-time major winner is not afraid to debut a trend on the golf course–as demonstrated by the looks he owned during the 2019 major season. To kick off the first major of the year, Koepka sported a light blue Nike golf hat on with an ultra-unique abstract print on Thursday at TPC Harding Park.

The Nike AeroBill Classic 99 golf hat features an artsy blue-and-white print that the company says was inspired by the all-too-common fog seen at the San Francisco muny. The cloud-like cap comes in light or dark blue and finished with a bright neon Nike swoosh.

Tony Finau wore a similar look during the first round debuting a new Nike Polo ($75)—though the print on his shirt would be considered more tie-dye than abstract art. The Nike Polo was designed as a simple staple for the brand to remix in limited-edition capsules. Another version was released earlier this week featuring a logo inspired by one of Koepka’s tweets.

Expect to see more tie-dye looks at Harding park as many designers were inspired by the history of counterculture in the area and the rainbow patterns that came to represent the free-spirited movement.

Nike’s PGA Championship collection also includes a bolder tie-dye design incorporated into five of the brand’s most popular golf shoe styles. The shoes were released early to those with a Nike membership and are expected to be available to the public Friday on the Nike website. Golf Galaxy just dropped two styles on its website including the Air Max 97 and Air Zoom Victory Tour Golf Shoes.
