After a thrilling week in Texas, the PGA Tour heads north to Dublin, Ohio for the Memorial Tournament, one of the longest-standing events on the schedule. The tournament will be hosted once again at Muirfield Village Golf Club, Jack Nicklaus’ ode to Augusta National, which also plays as one of the most challenging golf courses on the PGA Tour schedule.

Muirfield Village features inviting fairways surrounded by thick Kentucky bluegrass rough and small, difficult green complexes surrounded by some of the deepest bunkers on tour. Accurate driving, precision middle to long-iron play and a delicate touch around-the-green will always be required at Muirfield Village, which annually ranks as one of the five most difficult courses on the PGA Tour schedule.

Scottie Scheffler will return to defend his title, and he will be met by an intriguing crop of challengers, such as Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, Ludvig Aberg, Justin Thomas, and former Memorial champions, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa and Hideki Matsuyama.

Let’s dive into this week’s Memorial Tournament DraftKings slate.

$10,000 range

Play: Scottie Scheffler, $13,300:

It’s hard to find a golf course on the PGA Tour that is a better fit for Scottie Scheffler’s skill-set than Muirfield Village. Jack Nicklaus’ magnum opus is one of the best tests of overall tee-to-green play on tour, specifically middle to long iron play, and Scheffler remains the best iron player in the world. Coming off a fourth-place finish at Colonial where he gained over seven strokes on approach, I would expect Scheffler to contend for victory in Ohio once again.

Fade: Justin Thomas, $10,100:

While Justin Thomas is one of the best approach players on tour, his inability to find fairways at a consistent rate may prove costly this week at Muirfield Village. Thomas ranks outside of the top 40 in this field in the three main driving categories I am looking at, and Thomas’ inconsistency off the tee is a major hole in his repertoire.

$9,000 range

Play: Hideki Matsuyama, $9,000:

Hideki Matsuyama is one of the best overall approach players in this field, and he quietly has possessed the best short games over the last six months. Matsuyama is a former winner at the Memorial Tournament (2014), and he is coming off an under-the-radar performance at the Charles Schwab Challenge, where he gained strokes in both ball-striking categories.

Fade: Corey Conners, $9,100:

Corey Conners is bar none one of the best ball-strikers on the PGA Tour, but his struggles around the green could certainly stifle him at Muirfield Village. Conners ranks outside the top 40 in this field in recent around-the-green play and around-the-green play on courses with thick rough, and at this price and ownership, I am simply looking for more well-rounded players.

$8,000 range

Play: Tony Finau, $8,200:

Warren Little

Tony Finau is coming off back-to-back top-20 finishes at the Truist Championship and PGA Championship, and in his last start at Quail Hollow, Finau gained over five strokes on approach. Finau now returns to a golf course where he has already recorded five top-20 finishes and should perfectly accentuate his long and straight driving and strong middle- to long-iron approach play.

Fade: Russell Henley, $8,400:

Russell Henley had a great start to the season, but he has certainly cooled down over the past couple of weeks. Henley is coming off a missed cut at the PGA Championship where he lost 1.8 strokes off the tee and 3.6 strokes on approach, and the driver-heavy nature of Muirfield Village should provide a similar challenge off the tee for Henley.

$7,000 range

Play: Aaron Rai, $7,600:

Sam Hodde

Aaron Rai is one of the most accurate drivers of the ball on the PGA Tour, and this skill will pay dividends at Muirfield Village. Outside of his accuracy off the tee, Rai is also a great overall approach player, and even despite a missed cut last week at Colonial, the Englishman still gained strokes in both ball-striking categories.

Fade: Sam Burns, $7,900:

Sam Burns remains one of the best putters in the world, but all other aspects of his game remain shaky. Muirfield Village is one of the least intensive putting courses on the PGA Tour, where I would certainly sacrifice putting skill for tee to green skill seven days a week and twice on Sunday. Jack’s place is far from the best fit for Sam Burns’ skill-set.

Flier: Adam Scott, $7,200:

Jared C. Tilton

Adam Scott is coming off a top-20 finish at the PGA Championship, where he gained over three strokes off the tee, and now he returns to a golf course where he has already recorded seven top-25 finishes and four top-10 finishes over the course of his career. Scott’s driver should yield him a worthy advantage at Muirfield Village this year once again.

$6,000 range

Play: Michael Kim, $6,800:

Michael Kim’s driver ability and long iron approach play makes him one of my favorite sleeper plays in the $6,000 range. Kim is coming off a 16th-place finish at Colonial, where he gained 4.8 strokes off the tee and 1.2 strokes on approach. Kim ranks top 20 in this field in proximity from 200 yards plus and overall around-the-green play, both skills that I expend to pay dividends at Muirfield Village.
