AUGUSTA, Ga. — Sunday at the Masters just hits different. And that’ll be the case this year, with the 90th Masters in the balance.
The storylines with 18 holes remaining at Augusta National offer a fair share of intrigue, way more than most expected at the beginning of the round Saturday. Leading the way are Cameron Young and Rory McIlroy, who was ahead by a record six shots after 36 holes and is trying to become just the fourth player to successfully defend the Masters title. However, he let some heavy hitters back into this after shooting one-over 73 on Saturday, hindered by a double bogey on 11 and a bogey on 12. Young shot 65 to come screaming to the top.
"I'm still tied for the best score going into tomorrow, so I can't forget that, but I do know I'm going to have to be better if I want to have a chance to win," McIlroy said.
The pack that’s chasing the leaders isn't filled with hackers. Scottie Scheffler kicked things in gear with a Saturday 65 and is tied for seventh place, only four shots back. Sam Burns is one back, Shane Lowry is two back while Jason Day and Justin Rose are tied for fifth place, only two shots off the pace.
Charl Schwartzel and Aaron Rai get the day started at 9:06 a.m. with the first pairing. LIV Golf stars and Masters champions Sergio Garcia and Jon Rahm go two groups later at 9:28 a.m. McIlroy and Young are off last at 2:25 p.m., slightly earlier than the final time on Saturday to leave room if there's a playoff. Lowry and Burns are the penultimate group at 2:14 p.m.
