Luke List had gone 205 starts on the PGA Tour without a win. So it was no big deal that the former U.S. Amateur runner-up had to wait for nearly two hours after he finished off a striking final-round 66 to dispatch Will Zalatoris on the first extra hole of a playoff to win the Farmers Insurance Open with a pitching wedge shot to tap-in distance for the winning birdie.

List won in totally uncharacteristic fashion. A long hitter with a reliable tee-to-green game, List has long had issues on and around the greens. He came into the Farmers converting barely half of his sand-save opportunities and ranked 208th in strokes gained/putting—this after not finishing higher than 157th in that stat in any of the previous five seasons.

In Saturday's final round, however, those two parts of his game showed up. List holed out a bunker shot for birdie on the par-4 12th and ranked eighth in strokes gained/putting, gaining almost four strokes on the field.

List’s lob wedge is a 60-degree Titleist Vokey WedgeWorks prototype (his other two wedges are the company’s new SM9 model) and his putter is an Odyssey O-Works 1W with a center shaft.

List also was fifth in strokes gained/approach-the-green with his PXG 0311 ST irons. They included an 8-iron that he hit to five feet for a key birdie on the 194-yard par-3 16th as well as the pitching wedge that resulted in the winning birdie.

List had two prior runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour, including a playoff loss at the 2018 Honda Classic to Justin Thomas. This time he was on the winning side of the ledger—even if he had to wait a while to do it.
