Vandal drives car onto golf course, nearly hits players and damages greens
It looks like there’s a new type of errant drive we should be worried about on the golf course.
On Saturday afternoon at Hopkinton Country Club, an unidentified white hatchback drove onto the Massachusetts course wreaking havoc and nearly injuring golfers, and then just drove away. Police are still unclear on the motive behind the dangerous vandalism.
"We're not quite sure how they accessed the property," said JoAnn Parks, general manager of the club. "They drove over a few greens and fairways and then abruptly left. The greater concern is the safety and well-being of our guests. That's our number one concern and, thankfully, no one was injured."
“The Hopkinton Police Department is seeking help from the public in identifying this vehicle,” reads the Hopkinton, MA Police Department’s Facebook post. “On 5/4/24 around 5 p.m. this vehicle drove onto the Hopkinton Country Club golf course. They caused significant damage and came dangerously close to several golfers. Any information please call us on our non-emergency line 508-497-3401.”
The wayward drive caused "substantial damage" to the greens on holes 1, 7 and 9 and quite a few fairways. The seemingly random destruction of property occurred a little after 5 p.m., luckily right after the conclusion of a tournament at Hopkinton.
"We had just finished the tournament, so it wasn't as busy as it normally would be on a Saturday afternoon,” Parks continued.
Police Chief Joseph Bennett stated that local detectives are working on a few leads, as they search for the banged-up car with a black front quarter-panel.
