Save for later

The AIG Women’s British Open announced back in April that it had increased its total prize purse for the sixth consecutive year, moving it up to a record $10 million.

The winner on Sunday at Royal Lytham & St. Annes—Japan's Shiho Kuwaki—earned $1.5 million, the highest amount in the 50-year history of the Women’s British Open. The R&A and AIG partnership began back in 2019. The 23-year-old stunned everyone by steadily plodding her way through the week, shooting 66-70-73-70, then topping Germany's Esther Henseleit on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. It's her first LPGA title and major.

Henseleit dropped a 40-footer for birdie on the 72nd hole to get into the playoff. Yealimi Noh led by three shots on Sunday but could not hold on and finished third. World Nos. 1 and 2, Nelly Korda and Jenno Thitikul tied for fourth place.

But, back to the money and record earnings. Here is how the Women’s British Open fund has grown over the past few years.

2026: $10 million
2025: $9.75 million
2024: $9.5 million
2023: $9 million
2022: $7.3 million
2021: $5.8 million
2020: $4.5 million
2019: $4.5 million
2018: $3.25 million

Here's a look at the evolution of purses in the other four LPGA major championships over the past five years:

Chevron Championship: $9 million in 2026; $3.1 million in 2021
KPMG Women’s PGA Championship: $13 million in 2026; $4.5 million in 2021
U.S. Women’s Open: $12.5 million in 2026; $5.5 million in 2021
Amundi Evian Championship: $9.1 million in 2026; $4.5 million in 2021
