Russell Henley wasn’t just battling a hard-charging Hideki Matsuyama on Sunday at the Sony Open. He was fighting his own swirling mind. Entering the final round, the 32-year-old Georgia native had been honest about the struggles he’s had with trying to close out leads on the PGA Tour, acknowledging the fact that the five previous times he’s been the 54-hole leader on tour, he’s pulled out a victory just once.

Unfortunately for Henley, both his nemeses got the better of him at Waialae Country Club during a white-knuckle finish. Despite posting a six-under 29 on the front side and holding a five-shot lead with nine holes to play, Henley was caught on the 72nd hole when Matsuyama made his fourth back-nine birdie to post a 63. The defending Masters champion then made an eagle on the first playoff hole—sticking a 3-wood to inside three feet on the par-5 18th—to claim the title.

“Yeah, it's tough. I've slept on a few leads the last couple years. It's hard,” Henley said on Saturday. “I struggle to sleep. I'm already not the best sleeper.”

Most recently, Henley had a three-shot advantage heading into the final round of the Wyndham Championship last August only to finish T-7 after shooting a one-over 71 that left him one shy of a six-man playoff.

This time he did post a five-under 65 in the final round, but still couldn’t close things out.

As for Matsuyama, his impressive finish earned him a eighth career PGA Tour title and his third in the last nine months. It also allowed the 29-year-old Japanese native to move to No. 10 in the World Ranking, No. 1 in the FedEx Cup points race and claim the winner’s prize money payout of $1.35 million from an overall purse of $7.5 million. Here are the payouts for every player who made the cut in Honolulu.
