Nelly Korda defended her title on Sunday at the Pelican Women’s Championship, shooting a six-under 64 in the final round at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fla., to chase down overnight leader Allisen Corpuz and hold off Lexi Thompson. In the process, she claimed her eighth career LPGA win but her first since her triumph at Pelican a year ago—and the first since having to sit out part of 2022 to recovery from blood clot surgery.

It was an impressive final round for Korda, 24, who made six birdies in a 11-hole span from Nos. 7 to 17. That gave her a two-shot cushion on Thompson heading to the last hole and allowed her to make a closing bogey but still pull out the win.

You might recall that in 2021, Korda was cruising to victory in the penultimate event on the LPGA calendar only to make a triple-bogey 7 on the 17th hole. She bounced back with a birdie on the 18th to join a four-woman playoff that she won with a birdie on the first extra hole. Suffice it to say, Korda was happy to claim this year’s title in regulation.

Thompson closed with a 66 to finish runner-up for the eighth time since her last LPGA title in 2019. Corpuz shot a one-under 69 to finish two shots back of Korda in solo third, her second top-three finish during her rookie season of 2022.

With the win, Korda earned a first-place prize money payout of $300,000 from an overall purse of $2 million.
