Shane Lowry looked up into the pouring rain and cursed it quietly. Already warm and dry in the clubhouse at PGA National, Sepp Straka was ecstatic. If a sudden squall of rain in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., hadn’t positioned itself over the final stretch in the Honda Classic on Sunday, who knows what the outcome would have been?

What we do know is that Straka played superbly for the week with his driver and irons on a course that requires precision, and the 28-year-old out of Georgia now is the first native of Austria to win on the PGA Tour.

Seeming to come from out of nowhere, Straka birdied three of the final holes—including the 18th—to shoot four-under 66 and beat Lowry by one shot with a 10-under total. Lowry, the 2019 winner of the Open Championship, appeared gutted after shooting a third straight 67 that ended with seven straight pars. The Irishman finished solo second, one shot better than Kurt Kitayama, who notched his career-best result on tour.

Remarkably, Straka entered the tournament ranking 171st on the tour in strokes gained/tee-to-green, and he led the field in that stat for the week. He hit 92 percent of the fairways and reached 83 percent of the greens in regulation. It allowed him to make up for losing 0.42 putts to the field.

The 6-foot-3 golfer, ranked 176th in the world entering the week, got his first tour win in his 95th start. His previous best finish was a solo third in the Barbasol Championship in his rookie year of 2018-19.

Third-round leader Daniel Berger, who held a five-shot advantage over Straka and three others heading into the final round, shot 74 in the final round and placed solo fourth.
