In case you hadn’t heard, it’d been a little while since one of the game’s bright young talents, Jordan Spieth, has won on the PGA Tour. Which is why there was so much excitement heading into Sunday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Spieth, a three-time major champion and 11-time tour winner, started the final round at TPC Scottsdale tied for the lead with Xander Schauffele after shooting a 61 on Saturday, matching his career best 18-hole score. A victory would have been Spieth’s first since he won the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in 2017, some 77 frustrating starts ago. Since then, he has dropped to 93rd in the World Ranking.

But Spieth struggled to follow up the 61 on Sunday, shooting a one-over 72 and allowing another one of the game’s young talents, Brooks Koepka, to sneak into contention and walk off with an unexpected one-stroke victory over Schauffele and South Korea’s K.H. Lee.

Koepka’s closing 65, capped by three birdies and an eagle on the final six holes, allowed him to jump from five shots back entering the final round and win at the same venue he claimed his first PGA Tour title in 2015.

This eighth career tour win for Koepka (and fourth non-major) actually ended a winless streak, too, albeit one that stretched back to 2019 and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Since then, however, Koepka has battle injuries and lost some confidence, falling himself in the World Ranking from No. 1 to No. 13.

With the victory, Koepka claimed earned the first-place prize money payout of $1.314 million. The overall purse handed out at the WMPO was $7.3 million.
