On Sunday in Northern California, the back nine of the Fortinet Championship turned into, appropriately enough, a showdown between college golf standouts from Cal-Berkeley and Stanford. Max Homa and Maverick McNealy pulled away from the field, playing in the final two pairings at Silverado Resort in Napa, Calif., and sharing the lead at 18 under with two holes remaining.

But when Homa rolled in an 18-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole and McNealy double bogeyed the same short par 4 after a wayward tee shot, the Golden Bear proved to have the Cardinal’s number. A par from Homa on the 18th hole allowed the 30-year-old to make the first tournament of the 2021-22 PGA Tour season his third career win, McNealy closing eagle leaving him one stroke back.

Homa’s final Sunday number was a seven-under 65, making seven birdies and a holed-out eagle from 95 yards on the par-4 12th. After playing the opening 36 holes in five under, he went 14 under on the weekend (after a Saturday 65) to pull out the victory seven months removed from winning the Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

“I went to school up here, and I love the state of California,” said Homa, who grew up in Southern California. “It means a lot to me, obviously.”

With the win, Homa claimed the $1.26 million first-place prize money payout from the $7 million overall purse.
