Serial golf course thief arrested in connection with $12,000 heist from Connecticut pro shop
For nearly a year, a pro-shop heist totaling over $12,000 in stolen goods stumped local investigators in Connecticut. At around 6:30 a.m. on the morning of September 7th, 2024, a thief forced their way into the pro shop of Longshore Golf Club in Westport, Ct. by breaking a side door, and made off with golf clubs and bags totaling over $12,000.
The case went cold, but when 41-year-old Matthew Berman of the Bronx was arrested in connection with several similar golf club robberies in New York, authorities began to put the pieces together.

“Through investigation, Matthew Berman was developed as a possible suspect after he was arrested by New York authorities for similar golf pro shop burglaries that had been committed within their state,” police told Eyewitness News 3. “Evidence was subsequently developed by the investigating Westport detective reportedly linking Berman to the Longshore incident.”
‘True Detective’ it isn’t, but Westport PD were eventually granted an arrest warrant for Berman. They didn’t need to use it, however, as Berman turned himself in on August 21st, nearly 12 months after his Longshore robbery.
Berman couldn’t post his $100,000 bond and was later transported to Stamford Superior Court for arraignment. The fate of the missing clubs, meanwhile, remains unclear.
