Europeans ready to retake Augusta?

March 02, 2009

Mike Aitken, writing in the Scotsman, notes that for two decades, from 1980 to 1999, Augusta National was a European domain, that European golfers won the Masters 11 times (Nick Faldo three times, Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Bernhard Langer twice, and Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam once).

With the rise of Padraig Harrington, who is seeking to win his third straight major championship, and 19-year-old Rory McIlroy, Aitken speculates that Europeans might be on the brink of regaining the footing they lost in the era of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
