Longtime player-caddie combo Bubba Watson and Ted Scott shocked the golf world when they announced they were parting ways at the end of September. Much less surprising is the fact that Scott has already found another caddying gig. And it's a pretty darn good one at that.
Scott is on the bag of Scottie Scheffler at this week's RSM Classic, having traded a two-time Masters champ for a rising American star. And so far, so good.
With Watson's longtime looper on the bag for the first time, Scheffler fired an opening 63 at Sea Island to place himself among the early leaders in the final official PGA Tour event of the year. After, he talked about working with Scott.
"It's great," Scheffler told reporters at Sea Island. "Teddy's a real positive influence. We were in a good mood all day. He did a good job helping me stay patient, not over think things out there."
Scott McGuinness had previously been Scheffler's caddie. Scheffler and Watson are friends and they partnered to finish T-8 at last year's Zurich Classic.
The 25-year-old Scheffler has five top-three finishes in his two-plus seasons on the PGA Tour, including a T-2 at last week's Houston Open. The recent Ryder Cup star with a 59 under his belt is hoping Scott, who was on Bubba's bag for all 12 of his career PGA Tour titles during a 15-year run, can put him over the top in his quest for that elusive first victory.
"I really just think the world of him as a person, so for me that was—that's why I was attracted to him just being a potential good partner for me out on the course," said Scheffler, who is currently No. 17 in the Official World Golf Ranking. "We'll just see how things go right now. Today was a lot of fun and go from there."
