4 ways to dial-in your putting setup like a pro

The best putters train with feedback. These tools are everywhere on PGA Tour putting greens, because pros use them as checkpoints to make sure their setup and stroke stay consistent. Here's how you can use them, too. STEPHEN SWEENEY, BEST IN STATE TEACHER (FLORIDA)

  • Use a putting mirror on a straight putt to check your eye position and shoulder alignment.

  • Your eyes and shoulders should run parallel to the target line. If they're not, they're misaligned.

  • Your eyes can be directly over the ball or just inside the line—but should be in the same position every time.

  • Place two tees a few inches ahead of the golf ball, just wider than the ball itself.

  • Roll putts through the two tees to confirm your putter face is square to your intended start line.

  • If you clip the left tee, your putter face is closed; the right tee, the putter face is open.

  • Stand with a towel under the arches of your feet to center your pressure.

  • If you lean too far onto toes or heels, the towel will expose it immediately.

  • Staying stable in your lower body lets your shoulders and putter move together smoothly without compensation.

  • Many pros use custom mats to improve the path of their putting stroke.

  • A good putting stroke should move from slightly inside on the backstroke, to square at impact, to slightly inside again on the follow-through.
  • Mats like these also allow you to monitor your overall stroke length to avoid rapid deceleration or acceleration patterns.
