HOW TO HOP AND STOP A WEDGE SHOT
I get asked a lot how to hit that wedge shot that flies into the green low, takes a couple of hops and then stops dead. It's a cool-looking shot, but we're not hitting them to "look cool." It's actually the most effective way to get a short approach close. Follow these steps, and you can hit these shots, too. —Ben Griffin
- Look at your landing spot while making rehearsal swings
- Get a feel for the swing's size
- Step in when your confident
- Keep the clubface open
- Let it glide along the turf
- Impact the ground after hitting the ball
- Sweep, don't dig (small divots are OK)
- Favor your front foot–don't sway back
- Hinge the club up more than normal
- Make a three-quarter backswing
- Stay smooth as you start down
- Don't try to 'help' the ball up
- Keep your body rotating
- Commit to the follow-through
- Watch it check up by the hole
