Why We Like It
- The larger address profile sets the stage for the most forgiving model in the lineup, and the draw bias and upright lie angle will work to counteract a slice.
- The carbon-composite crown helps lower the center of gravity for higher launch, but expect the Max D to launch higher than the standard Max.
- A 30-gram “floating” tungsten bar positioned low and forward within the head yields a lower center of gravity for less spin and more distance.
- Affixed to the sole, the internal bar rests slightly above the floor of the club. This position keeps mass low while freeing the bottom of the face to flex more freely for better ball speed from impacts lower on the face.
- The cupface design wraps around the crown and deeper into the sole than in the past to create a more pliable sole and hinge for better face deflection, more distance and higher launch.
- The stepped sole design provides trailing-edge relief for cleaner center-face contact and fewer thin shots.
- A new adjustable hosel on the 3- and 5-wood lets users tweak loft and lie, the latter by plus/minus 2 degrees to better fit more types of swings.
- 15, 16.5, 18, 21.5 degrees (with a six-way adjustable hosel on the 3- and 5-wood)

Hot List testers noted the look is a little off-putting but not distracting. Solid strikes are rewarded — the ball comes off the face cleanly with a strong launch angle. Very forgiving, it produces high, stable shots that don’t flare side-to-side. It launches a touch higher with a bit more spin, but that spin is controllable, making the club reliable for a wide range of shots and “cruise control” play.
Hot List testers noted it's a "set-and-forget" club that sits on cruise control: it launches a touch higher with slightly more spin, but that spin is controllable and doesn't make shots float. Panelists praised its shot versatility — reliable distance, easy trajectory control, and the ability to shape or play any shot when needed.
Feedback included strong praise for its forgiveness and dependable, high ball flight. Reviewers said it launched straight and stayed on line, rarely fanning side to side, making mishits feel more controlled. Overall experience was described as very good, with forgiveness singled out as the standout characteristic.
Hot List panelists observed it rewarded solid strikes with strong ball speed and a pleasing launch angle; shots came off the face nicely and felt powerful. Distance and trajectory were standout positives. One minor issue: Better flight correction off the tee than off the ground.
A Skeptic’s Guide To New Golf Equipment
From the Manufacturer
Callaway Quantum Max D
Quantum Max D is our easiest fairway wood to hit, with high launch, maximum forgiveness, and a slight draw bias. Its larger footprint and shallower face promote easy launch and a natural, square delivery—all in a confidence-inspiring shape. The new Speed Wave 2.0 design frees up even more face flex, boosting energy transfer — especially on low-face strikes. It positions up to 40g of weight low and forward for faster ball speeds and consistent launch. The new Step Sole Design reduces turf contact on the sole for efficient strikes and consistent center-face contact. A reshaped heel adds stability through impact, helping keep the face square for greater control and accuracy.
