Overview
Just south of Jackson Hole, the Snake River Sporting Club is a four-season resort and residential community with a Tom Weiskopf-designed course that embraces the natural contours of the river valley. Set beside the 1,078-mile-long Snake River and surrounded by mountains, the scenic course winds through tall cottonwoods and sagebrush. The signature par-3 15th is nearly an island green, surrounded not by water but by native grasses, which beautifully frame the hole against the backdrop of the Snake River.

“A special club with a ton of amenities and a great clubhouse. The golf course plays in a scenic canyon along the Snake River, but gets tight in the middle holes along the front 9 and has little risk/reward on the back 9. Still, a great place to have a round!"

“I have often not enjoyed Tom Weiskopf golf courses. I have found them to lack strategic design with poor shaping work, especially in and around the greens. However, I enjoyed Snake River Sporting Club, although some holes did lack the risk/reward opportunities that make golf interesting and some of the greens had excessive contours that can be close to unplayable. The course plays in the valley south of Jackson, Wyoming. While the Snake River is very close to the club, none of the holes play directly on the river, which is a disappointment. The opening two holes are nicely played on the higher land to the east of the property. Tom Weiskopf is known for his drivable par 4 holes and the 2nd hole does not disappoint with an exhilarating drive to a partially blind green. The green is quite extreme, but acceptable due to the short nature of the hole. The next several holes play in a tight area of the property and are squeezed close to the homes, but the finishing holes on the front 9 are solid, especially the strategic 9th hole, which along with the 2nd hole are the two best holes on the golf course. The back 9 does not have any holes as exciting as 2 or 9, but, on the average, is better than the front 9. It plays along a more open part of the valley, giving each hole the room to be playable with a slightly errant shot. While it lacks many risk/reward golf shots, it is comprised of many solid holes that the golfer will enjoy. The club and the experience at the club is special. The entrance to the club is over a cool iron bridge over the Snake River and runs along a hillside with great views of the valley. The other amenities at the club are plentiful. Lastly, the clubhouse is really well done and has a wonderful grille room and outdoor eating area looking over the entire golf course and valley. It must be an absolute privilege to be a member at this club."

“Two very distinct 9s, with the front featuring treelined holes, small greens, and strategic decisions with every shot; the back 9 is wide open, windblown, and asks fewer questions, especially off the tee. Snake River Sporting Club sits in a beautiful, serene spot, but left this panelist wanting for more elevation changes amongst the mountains."

“Snake River Sporting Club is a Tom Weiskopf design located near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This mountain course is at an elevation of 5,900 feet and plays 7,533 yards from the championship tees. For challenge evaluation purposes, we used the Hopper combination tees which were 7,156 yards. Although located in the Teton Mountain range, Snake River is situated mostly in a flat valley with only a few elevation changes on the downhill 1st, 2nd, and 10th holes. The front nine winds through a wooded area while the back nine is open with few trees but many natural waste areas. The front nine, due to intruding trees or hole shape, is more suited for a straight ball or a fade as the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 9th holes do not really promote a draw. The open back nine allows bombs away and any shot shape from the tee box. Most greens are accessible with any ball flight, although the 5th, 9th, 12th, 17th, and 18th greens do have some hidden, well protected pin positions that require a lofted approach. There is a good variety of holes at Snake River with 3 short, 9 medium, and 6 long holes, although all three short holes, the par 4 2nd and 5th along with the par 3 4th, are on the front nine. Snake River favors a fade with 8 dogleg right holes compared to only 3 doglegs left (which are all on the back 9). Snake River is nestled on a plateau surrounded by the Tetons with scenic views of the mountains from everywhere on the course. The front 9 is currently undergoing some changes with much of the heavy, impenetrable low growth areas removed, and now just dirt, in exchange for the more benign hazards evident on the final 9 holes. This work on the first 9 holes detracts from the current aesthetic appeal but it should rebound when complete and matches the back 9. Snake River is a difficult but fair challenge for strong golfers with heavily sloped and undulating greens the primary culprit. The mountain elevation shortens some of the holes but strategically placed waste areas and bunkers force precise tee shots. In particular, the par 4 3rd and the stretch of 12-14 are all demanding tee shots followed up by long second shots to tough greens. The 2nd green has a diabolic pin position in the back left on a tiny shelf sloping away into a bunker – the true definition of a sucker pin. Snake River is in generally very good condition although greens were recently aerated and slower than normal while still rolling well and true. Fairways were firm and fast, and bunkers were consistent and well-sanded. Snake River is a fun course to play with 2 dramatically different 9 holes. From tight and wooded to wide open and wind-swept, Snake River provides magnificent views and a stern test of golf in a beautiful setting. It is a definite must-play-if-you-can course in the Jackson area."

“Maybe, "One of the Best Kept Secrets in America". Incredible vistas and scenery with fly fisherman drifting along the Snake River just a few hundred yards from the golf holes and magnificent Teton mountains creating the picturesque walls right and left of the spectacularly layed -out golf course which features a variety of challenging holes including two well bunkered par threes measuring over two hundred yards and a risk-reward downhill par four of 280 yards. The condition of the fast and firm greens and fairways is superb and ideal for not only a scratch player, but the higher handicap. An absolute treat which will provide you with a marvelous golfing experience !."

“Very low-key Weiskopf on the valley floor a few miles south of J-Hole. Imposing mountains block out the sun on the front side while the back side opens up near the river. Easy walk with a good vibe."

“Two different feeling nine holes... The front tight with small greens and the back nine is wider with bigger greens.... The staff was great. Had some flooding issues on two holes on the front from the snake river."
