Overview
It’s not wise for a rebel force to stand toe-to-toe against an empire—success depends upon more radical measures. In the case of The Bull at Pinehurst Farms, the empire is the late Herb Kohler’s neighboring 36-hole Blackwolf Run (plus the 10-hole Baths course), not to mention Kohler’s Whistling Straits complex just north of Sheboygan. To make The Bull equally attractive, Team Nicklaus went full commando with the design, using all the available assets of the 400-acre site to build broad meadow holes in the meadows, tightrope holes through the woods, and shorties along and across the winding Onion River. Traps are sprung everywhere—in the form of pot bunkers, inside doglegs, draped in front of greens—and numerous ravines are positioned to ensnare miscalculations. There’s a lot going on, but as they say, when you take on The Bull, you get the horns.

“The Bull at Pinehurst Farms presents a wide variety of shot options, off the tee, on layups, and into greens. You’ll need to know how to flight the ball, aim at proper targets, and shape your shots based on the layout and pin placements. “Challenge” is the word that best defines The Bull. After the opening four holes, which offer a gentle but firm handshake from designer Jack Nicklaus, you enter the heart of the course, where both length and precision are required to succeed. Nicklaus demands that you carry the ball a specific distance to a specific spot—and if you miss, you’ll pay the price. Even on shorter holes by yardage, you’re asked to thread tee shots into narrow fairways. The par 3s offer no relief; the shortest club I hit into one was a 6-iron, while the others required a 4-hybrid and 3-wood. During my round, a stiff summer breeze swept across the property, making club selection and accuracy that much harder. I can only imagine the added difficulty when colder, stronger winds arrive in the Spring or Fall. The layout offers strong variety, with a balanced mix of shot directions and elevation changes throughout the round. Course conditioning was solid: balls ran well on the fairways, greens accepted well-struck shots, and putts rolled true. Aesthetically, The Bull impresses, though several front-nine holes are framed by nearby homes. The back nine offers greater beauty in a more secluded setting. Golf is clearly the focus here, but it sits within a broader residential community. I enjoyed The Bull but left feeling it leaned more toward difficult than fun. The constant demand for length and precision, amplified by the wind, made for a stern test that at times detracted from the overall enjoyment."

“The Bull is a solid Nicklaus course with great variety, with some holes through a development, and many through a heavily-wooded creek bed. Despite some incongruent modern-era styling around some of the greens, there is great strategy here, and much more going on than the normal effort from the Nicklaus Group. No wonder that the Bull has cracked the top 100 public in the nation, as the course is very engaging, and something different than all the Dye layouts in the Sheboygan/Kohler area. This course was a pleasant surprise, and I would totally recommend a stop!"

“Has a few excellent holes, including the stretch from #5-7 (although it would be silly to try to go for the green on #7). Back nine is pretty, but requires many long cart rides."

“A wide course with big landing areas in the fairways. Then the fun began, a second shot course that became challenging to hit and putt the greens."

“Shot placement key at this course with tee shots, second and even third shots needing consideration on placement. Bunkers in great shape."

“The Bull at Pinehurst Farms is a modern, public Jack Nicklaus design located down the road from Whistling Straits. While there is plenty of competition amongst Wisconsin publics, The Bull often finds itself on the lower end of Best in State lists. This is a very difficult course with some tight holes lined by trees and water. It is in fantastic shape with some memorable holes as well. For me, this is not in the same class the Kohler courses, but worth a visit on a trip to the area."
