Overview
Beau Welling, the lead architect for Tiger Woods’ design company, was instrumental in building Bluejack National, ranked fourth in the state. He returned to Texas with his own design of Fields Ranch West Course at the new Omni PGA Frisco, headquarters of the PGA of America, a course designed to be a swashbuckling, playable alter-ego to the more tournament-oriented East Course. Welling accentuated the site’s gradual elevations to create a number of downhill drives to go along with large, roller-coaster greens and fairways that stretch 50 to 90 yards across. As one of our course-ranking panelists put it, “America definitely needs more courses like the West—fun to play, tough to lose balls and good birdie opportunities with well-executed shots.”

“Very enjoyable and playable course. While it sits in the shadows of the East Course, most amateurs would have more fun playing the west."

“The easier of the two courses on the property. Large fairways with big greens make this an enjoyable course as long as you pick the correct tees."

“PGA Fields Ranch West. Challenging a real test of skill. You need to hit fairways and land ball short or on the green any approaches wide or long will be almost impossible to get up and down. Course is unique and the routing is very interesting 5 par 5's including back to back par 5 finishes. The opening and closing holes are both great and fun to play. I would recommend playing up a tee from your typical tee box. Frisco West course is very tuff on and around the putting surface."

“The West course is the little brother of the two Fields Ranch courses. The course has several unique and interesting holes, the collection of Par 5's are fantastic they all play and feel completely different positing on the fairway is important for attack angle to the green. The course has several par 4's that offer only one line to attack the pin. and some of the greens are unique but almost teetering on the line of not playable the three or four putt could come into play on several holes. the course offers little space to miss your approach to greens. Any approach over 150 yards will be difficult to save a par."

“This upscale public course is one of two courses at the Omni PGA Frisco Resort, both of which opened in 2023. Fields Ranch West course was designed by Beau Welling. This course has generous fairways and is the much easier of the two courses and is more of a resort golf course."

“A fun and exciting beau welling design that gives you plenty of space off the tee, but asks you to think about the lines into the greens. Many holes feature risk/reward lines that make tee shots a ton of fun and with so much open space, humps, bumps, and open green fronts this course can be played by all types from long hitters to short bump and runners"

“"I can't properly discuss this course without referencing the East Course at Frisco. It's the perfect antidote to the East (though I find the east slightly better) and they go hand in hand with each other. The East is a championship test and well-designed for walking. The West is certainly less of each, though the fun shots more than make up for an slights in difficulty or walkability. It's a perfect course for typical resort guests. The wide fairways make it much easier off the tee. The greens are huge, providing generous targets and less chipping, however they're very undulated and players still need to hit it close to score well. There are many birdie opportunities, and rather than pure difficulty, the West provides opportunities for players to decide to get themselves into trouble vs. forcing them into trouble. Overall it's just a fun course - the first being a very scoreable par 5, but a wild green is a perfect intro to the course, from there nearly every hole is very scorable, but also plenty of places to leave yourself in trouble - the par 3 third is one of the more difficult holes, but it's an awesome green that the pin position changes how you play it from day to day - the par 5 6th is also a great represnetation of Fields Ranch West; it's a super fun hole with a big downhill drive and a great birdie opporutnity with 3 decent shots - however, man is the backdrop ugly with shipping warehouses and home construction in the background - the 8th is one of 2 great driveable par 4s (the 15th being the other) and both provide great birdie opportunities but it's really easy to get out of position on both - the 14th is the ""signature"" hole and it's really fun. The biarittz green is well-done and interesting - really fun to end on back to back par 5s ""

“Disappointing Welling course that starts out with a very pedestrian front nine. Holes 13-16 are strong and different than the other holes. Wide fairways lead to tough greens. Bunkering throughout the course was unimaginative. The 13th hole was a cool biarritz par four, which stood out from the rest of the course."

“Great layout through property. Varying hole distances - good mix of all pars. Love the two short hero shot par 4s. Manageable par 5s. Green complexes very sneaky challenging. Big hits to wide fairways on a lot of the holes but second shots need accuracy."
