The Course At Sewanee
Sewanee, TN • Public
Overview
It doesn't quite get the buzz as another nine-holer just 30 minutes away, but golf's hottest architect, Gil Hanse, did an extensive redesign of this nine-hole track in 2013. Though Hanse kept Sewanee’s original routing, he redesigned all nine greens, added new bunkers and created a new set of tees. The impressively rugged-yet-refined bunkering, prominent undulations and stunning vistas—most notably on the third and fifth holes—all give this layout character.

“The Inn at Sewanee overlooks the golf course and offers excellent accommodations. The golf course has nice practice facilities and the greens at Sewanee are some of the best bent greens I've ever played. If traveling through this part of the country, seek out this course and hotel!"

“Great 9 hole course redesigned by Gil Hanse. Very strategic bunkering and variety of holes across a a quote hilly site. The combination of heavy sloping fairways and greens puts a premium on ball striking. Short par 4 3rd is a highlight for it's great risk/reward design"

“The Course at Sewanee is one of the nation's notable 9-holers, reborn about 10 years ago when Gil Hanse turned a tired, uninteresting layout into a classic. The course dips and dives over undulating ground, playing back and forth around a creekbed on the edge of the Cumberland Plateau. There are two greens where 50+ mile views can be had over the edge. Hanse's course plays a bit different for 18 holes with a fun system of tees, but the highlight is #4, a short par four with a tiny push-up green that plays from 245-260 yards. "I can hit less that driver on the green" is often said, but a miss anywhere but short is severely punished. Other standouts include the long par three 5th and the short par four 8th with the "Bishop's Nose" feature in the fairway, named for the Bishop that designed the original course. This course will be forever compared with Sweeten's Cove up the road, and the two make a FANTASTIC 18-hole day added together, but they should both be played more than once!"

“Picturesque mountain top setting for this stunning 9 hole gem built by Hanse. About a 30 min drive from Sweetens Cove, one could play both of these 9 hole courses and play two of the top 9 hole courses in the country on the same trip!"
