“I loved this golf course. The setting on the Tennessee River is incredible. The routing is terrific as well. I love how even though the back nine is the inner nine, the river is still quite evident. This place is very underrated."

“Chattanooga Golf & CC is a Donald Ross design that was recently revamped by Bill Bergin. This is a fantastic traditional layout that embodies maturity of place and design characteristics. There is everything here from 450y par fours down to 280, par threes that require a 9-iron up to a fairway wood on the unique par three closer, and a handful of holes up against the Tennessee River that provide a linear hazard to avoid. I didn't know much about this course going in, and was pleasantly surprised. With a stacked lineup in Chattanooga of modern and classic favorites including the Honors, Black Creek, and Lookout Mountain, CG&CC may have an argument as best of the bunch."

“Large country club set along side the Tennessee River. The clubhouse and course both take advantage of the river views. The service is top notch, along with the well stocked pro shop. A few of the holes are a little too quirky and bring the overall score down some, but there are plenty of great holes and a trip to CG&CC is well worth it."

“The Chattanooga Golf and Country Club is a Donald Ross design established in 1896 nestled on the bank of the Tennessee River just across from Chattanooga. A 2005 restoration by Bill Bergin attempted to reapply a Donald Ross feel using 1940's aerial footage with extensive work on all aspects of the course being performed, as well as a 300-yard lengthening to the current 6,694 yard par 71 layout. For a short course, especially by today's standards, CGCC provides a very fair test for the highly skilled golfer. Tight fairways, elevated greens, stiff, swirling winds, especially on the river adjacent 7th through 9th holes, and strategically placed fairway and greenside bunkers offer sufficient challenge and prevent the modern bomber from overwhelming the course. Fast, sometimes very fast, contoured greens put a premium on ball position on or around the greens as well as a stout short game. Playing less than 6,700 yards, one would expect CGCC to be a combination of mostly short and medium length holes but there are a surprising number of long par 4's playing well beyond 450 yards (3, 8, 12, 15), a robust par 3 222-yard 18th, and a 555 yard par 5 16th. While there are several short par 4's, notably the 11th and 17th holes, they do not appear cookie-cutter sameness through some elevation changes and bunkering. However, 8 of the 11 par 4s are straight holes differing only in length and do not require shot-shaping to any significant degree. Chattanooga Golf and Country Club is situated close to and overlooking the Tennessee River. 4 of the holes (1, 7, 8, and 9) offer magnificent views of the river and it is very much in play. Winding through rolling, hilly woods, CGCC is a very pleasant round of golf with scenic vistas unspoiled by overdevelopment. In particular, 3 finishing holes on the front nine are exceptional with the par 3 9th sporting a redan green and steep drop-off to the river a personal favorite. Finishing both 9s with par 3 holes is unusual but both are very good holes so one is not left disappointed. CGCC was in very good condition during my late Fall visit. Greens were very firm, receptive, and quite fast. Like most Donald Ross designs, positioning above the hole makes par very challenging. Balls rolled exceptionally consistent and true with nary a bobble. Firm fairways were in excellent shape providing very good lies for well-placed tee shots. Bunkers were well-maintained with good sand depth and consistency across both fairway and greenside bunkers. Chattanooga Golf and Country Club is a very fun course to play offering plenty of challenge and variety, even if there are a bit more straight-away holes than optimal. There are plenty of birdie opportunities for someone playing well but very few, if any, easy, throw-away holes. Depending on the time of day and season, wind off the river can be a dramatic influence and add more difficulty to the course. Playing CGCC, one knows you are visiting a Grand Old Dame of southern golf designed by a master and restored close to his initial vision."

“Great Donald Ross course in a golf-rich town. The course can be incredibly difficult when the winds are up."

“Course is in great shape but the layout is architecturally very bland. Feels like you're just going back-and-forth down tree lined fairways. They claim to be a Donald Ross course, but the Donald Ross society does not recognize it as such because "renovations" over the years have taken almost all of the Ross qualities out of it. Hopefully in the future someone can restore it to it's former glory because it's a great piece of property."

“Fun course that features a few holes along the Tennessee River. A lot of undulations in the fairways that make some of the second shots very demanding."
