Pound Ridge Golf Course
Overview
This is Pete Dye at his prettiest—and toughest. Pound Ridge, which sits 40 miles northeast of Manhattan, mixes perfectly manicured fairways and greens with a long, demanding, undulated layout. It's a visually intimidating course with a number of blind tee shots, huge bunker complexes and some long carries, and Instagrammable beauty at every turn. In typical fashion, Dye wedged a lot of trouble into this 175-acre site with woods, wetlands, water hazards, rocks and boulders coming into play. (His advice? Bring extra balls.) There is little to no room for error on most tee and approach shots, but that's what makes it a must-play (and with five sets of tees ranging from 5,151 to 7,165 yards, you have options). The property features some of the highest points in the area, offering expansive views of the surrounding Westchester countryside—an area known for its private courses.

“Westchester is extremely deep on the private aisle but really only has Pound Ridge as far as public options go. A hefty pricetag makes it so a round here feels private and the course does not receive much play. While over 170 acres, Pete Dye created a very tight and sometimes claustrophobic layout on hilly terrain. In typical Dye fashion, this is a very challenging course with danger everywhere - it is likely too hard for the majority of public golfers and is not a course you could easily play everyday. There are some really dramatic and beautiful holes here which add to the aesthetics and variety. It is among the better public courses in New York state but the cost and difficulty are a bit too much."

“A good public course that has balance, conditioning, and challenge."

“This course is in great condition typically but presents quite the challenge, especially when the wind is howling. The elevation changes and routing make it more of a cart course than a walkable one, although they do let you walk on weekdays. Some very difficult long holes, combined with some nice scoring opportunities. Very pricey, however, so recommend offseason play if that's a factor for you."

“Bring extra balls, but there are enough good holes to make this worth playing for better players. Not a great option for beginners or wayward drivers."
