The Stanwich Club

Overview
A mainstay of Connecticut golf since the 1960s, Stanwich has undergone modifications over several years by Tom Fazio and his team, all based on the club's masterplan that addresses the course’s tees, bunkers, greens and mowing lines. The latest project was the rebuilding of five green complexes and the creation of a completely new first hole. “The first hole saw a complete re-imagining,” explained Fazio design associate Tom Marzolf. “The old hole was a quick dogleg-left that had many trees blocking the path around the corner. We looked to improve the options off the tee and allow alternate ways to play the hole. Earthwork to cut the inside corner and open up views to the green have completely changed the feel of the tee shot.” More changes to Stanwich, both big and small, are still to come.

“One of the best courses in CT. The club has softened some of the greens over the past several years due to the severity of the slope vs the speeds they maintain (member told me they run at a 13 most of the time) and have plans to soften two of the par 3's in the near future. It is a beautifully maintained golf course offering a good test of your golf game. Definitely worth playing if invited."

“Courses in incredible conditions. Greens are some of the best out there. Really enjoyable course to walk. Tee shots are fair, what you see is what you get. Course is penal and punishing if you miss the greens. The more you play, you will understand more of the angles needed into the greens. Bunkers are in tiptop shape. No major memorable holes though."

“Pretty golf course but lacked variety of shots and hole layouts"

“Stanwich is a challenging golf course that can engage players of all skill levels. The course is very well-maintained and will require a variety of shot shapes and trajectories to score. Deep bunkers and water hazards make the course bite back when shots are not properly executed."

“Stanwich Club is an interesting architectural course on the CT-NY border in a very upscale neighborhood. The Club is likewise very upscale with fantastic conditioning, especially the greens which are some of the best and most notorious in the Metropolitan area. The course can play very difficult from Back tees at over 7400 yards given the green speeds and well-placed bunkers surrounding them, and is a good challenge even from a few tees up. This is one of the best courses in Connecticut no doubt but isn't quite as memorable as its Westchester neighbors."

“Stanwich is your quintessential mid-century modern private club. It has always hung its hat on difficulty as an oft tournament host, but the club has relented a bit lately. Recent renovations are geared towards playability on the margins, but down the middle the course is still one of the most challenging in New England. The par threes especially are borderline over-the-top, but the rest of the course is enjoyable, even if you are unlikely to remember more than a couple holes a week later."

“Great walk! Beautiful, challenging holes, classic. Perhaps too many elevated greens for the average player."

“Arguably the best conditioned course in the NY metro area. A perennially difficult track sullied by two awful par 3's, #8 and #16. What a great course otherwise!"
