“Weequahic was always a fine municipal course in Newark, but now is much improved after an extensive redesign from Stephen Kay. Although shorter, and now maybe even easier than before, Kay fixed some of the awkward routing from the previous course, took trees down, and did work on all 18 of these greens, which are much more interesting now. He also added fescue, which gives the course a beautiful look you usually find at the private courses in Northern NJ. At just 5400 yards, it is unlikely Weequahic can compete with the elite private golf for best in state, but this is a very fun, much improved municipal course and another example of the splendid public golf in Essex County."

“The oldest public course in New Jersey, Weequahic was built in 1913 by Baltusrol's then-pro George Low. A classic, well-routed muni, Weequahic is quite short at just over 5700 yards, but makes up for it with tight fairways, plenty of undulation, and small greens. The course is one of three classic courses in Essex County's municipal system along with Hendricks Field and Francis Byrne. All three are worthy of a play for visitors to Newark or NYC."

“The state’s first public course is still perhaps the best bargain in the NYC area. For about $30, nonresidents can enjoy a nice, rolling layout designed originally by George Low, the original club pro from Baltusrol, who was responsible for their old island-green par 4 (now the 16th on the Lower). Played in March so can’t comment on peak-season conditions — but it met expectations, and there are some fun holes with interesting greens. Not a huge penalty for wayward shots with a lot of fairways running next to another hole."
