Overview
Walter Travis was a man of many talents. As a player he won three U.S. Amateur titles and one British Amateur, and his 80-percent match win percentage ranks among the sport’s all-time best. He was a writer, editor and publisher of The American Golfer in addition to designing over two dozen golf courses. His greatest skill might have been bunkering courses. His work revamping no. 64 Garden City in the early 1900s—adding, moving and deepening the bunkers as well as rebuilding the greens—transformed that course into what it is today, but his most artistic work is at Hollywood. The elaborate bunker shapes and arrangements are nothing short of dazzling, especially as they’ve been sharpened and polished by Brian Schneider of Renaissance Golf, along with shaper Blake Conant. They lay out like arrangements of gemstones and the spots on a jungle cat, varying from the size of a mansion parlor to little more than a bread box. Anything like it attempted today would be considered garish, but Travis’s Beaux Art bunkering at Hollywood is a study in artistry.

“Hollywood Golf Club is a Walter Travis gem that has been brought back to its best self with the (relatively) recent restoration work by Brian Schneider. Schneider has highlighted many of the key facets of Travis' design style (e.g. numerous false fronts) as well as many of the site's unique aspects. Hollywood possesses a wonderful assortment of holes with a high degree of variety and challenge. The aesthetics and texture of the course are stunning. The routing takes full advantage of the site the course sits on as well as it's proximity to the ocean and associated winds."

“Hollywood is an intensely private Walter Travis design located just off the Jersey Shore. The course is best known for its bunkering, which is extremely unique and contributes to the course's strong aesthetic appeal and character. Hollywood also features excellent conditioning, especially on its greens which are vexing and quite varied. There are many strong holes here, but the par 3 4th and par 4 12th are particularly memorable and world-class. Over the last few decades, the membership has approved many changes which have improved the course. Most recently, this includes redoing the par 3 17th and bringing back a wonderful walking bridge that was originally there. This course is under-the-radar and probably prefers to stay that way, but should be in the discussion when talking about the best courses in New Jersey."

“Hollywood Golf Club is a gem. The quality of the bunkering is elite. Hollywood is a terrific layout with no bad holes. 4th hole is a signature par 3 that is fair but difficult, with the green nestled into a bowl of fescue hills. 12 is a fantastic, difficult par 4 with a split fairway and great shot lines. 14th hole showcases the deliberateness of the layout, with a semi blind tee shot to a dog leg right over water to a tricky green. Fair, but challenging. 16th hole features a big par 4 from the tips with well places bunkers and an elevated green that requires two precise shots. The course is fun for higher handicappers while still holding up as a real "players" course. Green keeper is doing a wonderful job as the course is in outstanding shape with flawless greens and excellent fairways. A treat to play."

“This course is outstanding. Might be the best example of Travis' work that I have seen period. Dramatic bunkering and green sites that are visually stunning with all kinds of internal contour and rolloffs and pull-ups along the edges. The grassing lines are exceptional (all superintendents should see them) as the fairways feed into the bunkers and tightly along/around the edges of the green side bunkers helping to widen the approaches as much as possible. The maintenance is clearly a massive challenge but the club and superintendent are up to it as the place was in excellent shape. Hand raking of what must be close to 200 bunkers would put most clubs under. If you haven't seen Hollywood, it is a must play."

“The class of all the NJ "shore" courses, though not networked with the other Monmouth county private courses. Doak's work here really made the place shine. It's as enjoyable a day as any in NJ and second only to Somerset Hills for interesting greens."

“Hollywood Golf Club is a hidden gem that is lost in metro-NYC golf landscape. In my opinion if this course was anywhere else in the country it would be more highly acclaimed. This Walter Travis design is full of character, highlighted by some of the most fun green complexes you can find anywhere. Execution of short wedge shots is critical to find the correct spots on the greens and the course really shows its teeth when a player gets out of position. The course is kept in fantastic condition and the bunkering is marvelous, highlighted by the par 4 12th hole. Travis offers visitors a full spectrum of holes, from the short par 3 4th to the longer par 4s. Tree removal over the years has transformed the course."
