Overview
Since it first opened as a nine hole amenity in the early 1950s, Woodmont South (it was expanded to 18 a few years later) has been the club's shorter, sportier course compared to the more robust North, ranked fifth in Maryland. That all changed following a 2023 remodel by architect Joel Weiman, who transformed the course into a Melbourne Sand Belt/American prairie hybrid by recontouring every green and surrrounding them with expanses of tight turf, building Australian-style bunkers with sharp lips that cut toward the edges of putting surfaces and introducing native grass buffers throughout the course. He also found additional lenghth, taking the championship tees to over 7,000 yards. No longer the "other" course, the South more than holds its own in distinctiveness not just against the North but against most other designs in the region.

“This redesign has completely transformed what once was a forgettable sibling to big bro North. Ice cream scooped out green side bunkers test the mind, and the flat stick, to keep putts on the surface. On holes #1, 3, 6,9, 13, 16 & 18, deep sand traps are cut so precisely inside shaved down greens that in certain pin placements it would be impossible to take a direct line to the hole. And the 12th (4-in-1 complex measuring over 10K SqFt w/ runoffs directly into front pond or multiple cut in bunkers in back) and 14th (mushroom shaped w/ 8’ deep bunkers within) greens are simply imaginative works of art. Steep lips in fairway multi layered bunkers gives the impression of waves crashing into each other but oddly enough, the upper sections exposed tan concrete as the support structure."

The course lacks length and with a 128 slope from the tips, still pales in comparison to the challenge presented on the North course. But the overall aesthetics, distinctiveness and shot options on holes 2-7 and the final two par 5s, leave a memorable journey ahead for observant travelers."

“Following a renovation in 2024, Woodmont South is now a fascinating course with parkland topography but sandbelt-inspired bunkering lined by fescue and tight edges and a wild set of greens. The bunkering and greens here are both very unique for the area, but also very attractive, adding much interest to the course. Woodmont South is known as the easier of the two main courses at the 45-hole facility, and remains fair and playable with wide fairways and numerous teeboxes for golfers of all levels. From the Back Tees, however, this is still a strong test with some longer par fours such as 7 and 13 as well as numerous well-placed water hazards. Two particularly challenging holes include the par threes 12 and 15, which both stretch to 210+ yards over water to crazy greens. Overall, this is a very fun layout and a great member's course."

“The operative word to describe the newly-renovated South Course at Woodmont Country Club is “fun.” Joel Wieman has transformed the existing layout into a course that evokes the Australian Sand Belt, with bunkers lined with fescue and high grass rough patches jutting into fairways that serve as hazards. Although there are plenty of challenging holes, they are mostly mitigated by birdie opportunities. Fairways are generous, and the uplift greens are large and wildly variable, with internal rumbles and external slopes that can help well-executed approach shots find some potentially crazy hole locations. Some greens have huge sections seemingly gouged out. But most interestingly, many greens are hard against bunkers and water hazards—there is no fringe or rough—you’re either on the green or you’re in the hazard. Fortunately, the greens tend not to slope into the hazards (unlike the Donald Ross motif), so it’s unlikely that you will accidentally putt or chip into one. But the bunker recovery shots are tough, and you can expect some wild bounces if your approach shot barely misses the green. If you play a fade, this is the course for you. There are so many fade holes that you could be forgiven if you thought you were playing in a circle. Three of the par 3s are similar, with downhill shots over a fronting pond, but their distances do vary. The back nine finishes strong, with a reachable par 5, a beautiful uphill par 4, and a long 3-shotter back to the clubhouse. All told, with this new design, the South has the potential to upstage its northern neighbor. "
