Overview
The original nine holes laid out at Chevy Chase Club outside Washington D.C. by Willie Davis in 1896 were expanded to 18 two years later, most likely by club professional Willie Tucker. Donald Ross, quite early in his career, remodeled those holes in 1910. This course existed until 1921 when British architect C.H. Alison, longtime partner of Harry Colt, redesigned the course once again, with the construction overseen by another esteemed architect, William Flynn, and his partner, Howard Toomey. Robert Trent Jones made alterations in 1947, and Arthur Hills executed another full renovation in 1997. When Andrew Green was hired to restore the course, the question was: to what iteration? Ultimately Green and the club focused on the Alison presentation of Chevy Chase using early 1930s aerial photography as the touchstone for reconstruction. But the team was also intrigued by elements from other eras, including linear mounding and raised grassy berms from the turn of the century identifiable from other photographs. The $18-million revamped design opened in 2025 with Alison-inspired bunkers, larger and more contoured greens, wider playing spaces and a new par 3, the 15th, created as an homage to the no-longer-in-existence par-3 10th that was sacrificed in the 1990s to make room for tennis facilities. Chevy Chase stands out as one of the middle Atlantic’s best iterations of early 1920s architecture.

“Andrew Green's renovation created a layout with thoughtful bunkering. Course is very open off the tee. Greens are very large with significant undulation. Sixteenth hole is a wonderful par 4 with good bunkering and a small creek running up the right side of the fairway. Ditches off the fairways are very reminiscent of Oakmont. Tightly mown areas around greens provide for creativity in shot selection when approach play misses the mark. The flow from green to tee makes the course a pleasurable walk and the esthetics fit the landscape well."

“The recent Andrew Green renovation at Chevy Chase has added length, significantly enlarged both the size and undulation of the greens, repositioned numerous bunkers and added unique features such as mounding that collectively have improved the Course. Prior to the renovation, Chevy Chase was an understated, members’ course that was always well-conditioned, but at the same did not measure up to its enormous property or magnificent Clubhouse. The Course today offers very wide fairways and runups to the greens to appeal to the membership but also adds greater challenge to the lower handicap player who must find the right angle to the large greens to position approach shots to score. To challenge the better players, conditions need to be firm and fast, or low scores can be had. Congratulations to Andrew Green and Chevy Chase on these improved renovations, which should propel them higher in state rankings. His work has made Chevy Chase a more visually attractive course with greater strategy and shot selection, while maintaining a member-friendly challenge."

“Located less than a mile from our nation's capital, Chevy Chase Club has always been an elite social and country club of DC, with numerous amenities including an 18-hole golf course. It seems the course was always good but didn't quite reach the level of excellence of the Club's other amenities, but this all changed in 2025 with an extensive renovation by Andrew Green. Green lengthened the course, expanded greens, cleared hundreds of trees, and redid the bunkers and the resultant course is a tremendous one with greatly enhanced aesthetic and strategic values. Also now with greater challenges for better golfers and continued excellent conditioning, this is clearly one of the best courses in Maryland and certainly belongs in the conversation with Congressional and Baltimore for Best in State."
