“Really well conditioned course. Holes 9 and 18 are memorable finishing holes. Routed well through property. Feels much bigger than 165 acres. Challenge is around the greens only - all fairways extremely wide and hard to miss. Par 3 are quality and framed well."

“Tucked into the vibrant and growing community of Carmel, Indiana, Woodlawn Country Club presents a championship-caliber test of golf framed by pristine playing conditions, thoughtful design elements, and a compelling mix of natural beauty and strategic challenge. While the club may not be as widely known as some in the Midwest, it deserves recognition for delivering a polished and engaging experience for players of all levels. Course Conditions: Firm, Fast, and First-Class Woodlawn is defined by its immaculate fairways and green complexes. The fairways are a joy to play from—firm and fast with a uniform, tight turf that rewards precision off the tee and encourages run-out. These conditions demand smart driving strategy, particularly on longer par 4s and doglegs where placement can be more important than length. The greens are among the standout features of the course—fast and firm, yet impressively receptive to well-struck iron shots. They allow players to fly the ball to the hole with confidence, while also inviting creative shot-making on approaches and recoveries. The variety of short game options around the greens is exceptional, with contours and tightly mown areas that reward touch and imagination. Layout and Challenge: Strategic, Varied, and Demanding Woodlawn plays long and demanding, but the layout features a range of tee boxes that offer setup flexibility and make the course enjoyable for different skill levels. From the back tees, it stretches to a challenging length that requires both distance and accuracy, but shorter tees offer a manageable alternative while preserving the strategic integrity. The green complexes share a consistent architectural language: long and narrow, often tilted, and protected by well-placed bunkers and water hazards. This uniformity creates cohesion but still allows each hole to feel distinct, especially thanks to the placement of hazards, movement in the land, and changes in direction throughout the routing. The course excels in presenting varied challenges—with doglegs, strategic tree lines, angled greens, and elevated approaches that test club selection and shot shape. Creative bunkering and the positioning of water features further elevate the need for a thoughtful approach, especially on second shots and par 3s. Aesthetics: Mature, Serene, and Natural The visual character of Woodlawn is quietly beautiful. The course winds through corridors of towering, mature hardwoods, lending a classic parkland feel. Water hazards—used sparingly but effectively—add tranquility and strategic teeth, especially when paired with green complexes set tight against their edges. The conditioning of the entire property, from tee to green, adds to the refined aesthetic, creating a peaceful and polished atmosphere throughout the round. Fairness vs. Difficulty: A Balanced Test While Woodlawn can be a stern test—particularly for those playing from the back tees or facing tucked pin positions—it remains a fair golf course. Fairways, while narrow in places, offer run-out space and reward precision. Greens provide ample variety in pin locations, some of which demand a high level of precision to access, but players are never punished unfairly. The course places a premium on execution without feeling overly penal, making it challenging but never contrived. Highlight Holes: The Best of Woodlawn Hole 3 – Par 4: A tight dogleg left with water guarding the corner and a large, shallow bunker protecting the front-right of the green. Requires a confident tee shot and a precise mid-iron to a narrow target. Hole 7 – Par 3: A long one-shotter over water to a slightly raised green, heavily bunkered on both sides. The wind swirls here, and club selection is everything. Hole 10 – Par 5: A reachable par 5 for long hitters, but guarded by deep fairway bunkers off the tee and a green complex bordered by water left and rear. A true risk-reward opportunity that can swing a round. Hole 13 – Par 4: A sharp dogleg right through mature trees, demanding a fade off the tee. The approach plays uphill to a long, narrow green protected by a series of small, deep bunkers. Hole 16 – Par 4: One of the most picturesque holes, framed by towering trees and a diagonal creek crossing the fairway. The approach is to a green with subtle tiers and deceptive slopes. Hole 18 – Par 4: A strong finishing hole, uphill with bunkers that pinch the landing area and a demanding second shot to an elevated, well-guarded green. A par here is well-earned and satisfying. Conclusion Woodlawn Country Club stands as a hidden gem in central Indiana—a course that marries exceptional conditions, elegant design, and strategic substance. It's a course that challenges the serious golfer while welcoming the casual player, thanks to its multiple teeing options and clear routing. With a setting enhanced by mature trees, well-integrated water features, and a natural flow, Woodlawn provides a refined yet accessible golf experience that keeps players coming back. Whether you're chasing a number or simply enjoying the walk, Woodlawn offers an honest, beautiful, and thought-provoking round of golf."

“Woodland CC has several Pete Dye “template holes”, especially the par 3 holes 2 and 12, and the par 4 holes 9 and 18. Woodland has a variety of risk-reward options, especially for long hitters (all par 5s) and the drivable par 4 14th. Many holes have run-up options if the previous shot is well-placed. Holes were distinct from each other exemplified by the back-to-back par 5s (holes 3 and 4), which offered very different challenges from each other."

“This old Bill Diddel course was re-done in classic Dye style by the Indiana legend himself a few years ago, and it's the usual circus of pot bunkers, bulkheads, and too-skinny at times holes. This is a quintessential Dye course now, always with a few very neat holes, and a handful of clunkers too."

“Complete redesign in 2002 by Pete Dye due to club selling land off at a prominent busy corner and buying new land in a quieter and undeveloped area west of the range. In redesign Dye added a lake that #9 works around to the right hand side and #18 works around to the left hand side. #2, #3, and #9 are standout holes on the front nine while 18 is the clear standout hole on the back 9. Somewhat of a hassle to get back to the back tee on 13 and 15 and if you hadn't played here before or if you didn't know any better you may completely miss them. Design variety suffers a bit due to par 3's & par 5's all playing to similar yardage as well as the biased towards downhill holes versus uphill or flat holes, and several of the green complexes lack a bit of character/variety as well as the majority of the bunkering is somewhat bland. Some interesting Dye features such as cyclopse bunkers, #2 is a typical Dye par 3 angled against water, your common Dye 1st hole that is short and easy, and the typical Dye par 4 that works along water the entire length of the hole w/ 9 and 18. Some houses around the perimeter of the property but not in your face like residential golf development tends to be."
