Overview
Just over an hour southwest of London in the rolling hills of North Downs sits Hankley Common Golf Club, peacefully situated on 850 acres of preserved natural heathland. It's a rare opportunity to truly feel secluded on a golf course. Hankley Common opened its original nine-hole iteration in 1897 before James Braid added the remaining nine holes in 1922. The course owes its roots to Harry Colt’s 1936 remodel, while the current look was modernized in a 2019 restoration project led by Martin Ebert, Tom Mackenzie and MJ Abbott. The restoration took place in two phases and focused on reconstructing bunkers to sit in the landscape more naturally, as well as restoring the natural heathland areas that border fairways and protect greens. The fairways at Hankley Common meander over subtle undulations, protected by dense heathland rough and towering oak, rowan and woodlark trees positioned just off of the fairway. Greens are built in classic links-style with lots of pitch, deep guarding bunkers and open run-up areas to play smart approaches. While the entire course is camera-worthy, the long par 3s at the seventh and 11th truly stand out. They feature dramatic forced carries over rose-colored heathland to distant greens visually shrunk by the bunkers in front of them.
