Overview
Located midway between Richmond and Washington D.C., this big, exploratory layout by architect Tom Clark and consultant Ron Whitten (Golf Digest architecture editor emeritus) was two decades in the making. Intended to be the “first true Concept Course of the 21st century,” the wait pays off with a design full of motifs of famous British and American holes, a routing that tackles robust topographical movements, small but highly contoured greens, split fairways and Civil War-inspired fortifications.

“Challenging course with exceptional use of the natural surroundings. Firm, rolling fairways with firm greens with many challenging pin positions. The demanding course requires accurate , crisply hit approach shots to extremely undulated greens. An absolute treat to play and the course condition makes for a wonderful golfing day."

“Massive property: some variety, but several atypical features become oddities… No. 4 hardpan, barren surface around tee boxes, No. 5 massive streak of gray stone inconsistent within course, and No. 6 with fairway run-off to unplayable area for drives to a center knob in the fairway. Lots of solid, challenging and interesting holes… No. 3, No. 8, drive-able No. 10, Biarritz No. 12 green, and No. 14 with two distinctly different driving options. Seems that a lot of effort went into mimicking great historic holes at the cost of consistency, or at least not establishing its own character."

“Great routing, nice location but all 18 greens are severe and hard to putt of chip too."

“Some very interesting holes with different options available, chosen according to tee and hole placements. Some extensive distances between green and next tee hurts continuity. Good variety. Conditioning is good now. They redesigned a questionable green on the first hole, now good. Great match play course. Classic hole designs - Biarritz, Redan plus #18 built as replica of #18 Shinnecock."
