Overview
Host of the PGA Tour’s WGC match-play event in 2007 and 2008, the South course at Gallery Golf Club features wider fairways than its sibling layout. Reminiscent of Pinehurst No. 2, many greens are large, slightly elevated and crowned, placing a premium on well-placed approaches. Just like its sibling course, the South offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains.

“John Fought’s Gallery Golf Club South Course is a brawny challenge. At nearly 7500 yards from the back tees, and on a windy site, the very wide fairways and quite large greens do nothing to discourage the big hitters from taking a rip off many of the tees. The bunkering is minimal but strategic. The greens are mostly elevated and crowned, but the contouring is not severe, so the greens are surprisingly flat around many common hole locations. They are grainy, however, so that must be considered to have a good putting day. In the winter and spring, the first 7 holes play almost directly into the prevailing southerly wind, and this part of the course has a links-like feel. Things start getting interesting when you start to turn away from the wind, with a drivable par-4 7th that calls for a draw over and around fairway bunkers, a short but pretty par-3 8th with a green set hard against the desert on the right, and an excellent double-fairway 10th hole where the aggressive tee shot along the left might allow for an eagle putt. Maintenance and conditioning are very high quality, with superior rollout on drives and greens that hold a shot well enough to allow you to reliably use spin to control approach shots. The elevated desert surroundings are spectacular, and the course allows walking where the walk is only moderately difficult and the walking paths through the desert are obvious. High handicappers may have issues with some of the longer, forced carries off of the tee, so choose your tee box wisely, but the wide fairways and lightly bunkered greens that mostly allow open approach shots will be welcomed."

“I prefer the South course to the North course. It is an out-and-back course that you tend to see in Scotland for example. Love the views of the valley and the Moreno airport "boneyard"! Great conditioning and great service."

“A relatively easy course that is pretty typical for the area. Good conditioning and pleasant surroundings."

“The South Course is on less dramatic land than the North Course being further away from the mountains. The South Course has large undulating greens and generous playing corridors which is quite unusual for a desert course. The course gets more challenging the closer you get to the hole."
