Overview
Playing among the stately ponderosa pines in Flagstaff, this Jerry Pate design has plenty of elevation changes and offers scenic views of the San Francisco Peaks in the distance. The pines closely guard the narrow fairways, and subtle doglegs often require proper positioning to avoid being blocked out by the lurking trees. There are numerous memorable shots at Flagstaff Ranch, including the downhill tee shot with the mountain backdrop on the par-4 opener and the downhill approach over a sea of boulders on the par-3 12th.

“The setting is spectacular. Some tees and greens offer great views. The thirteenth tee is back up against a caldera, an extinct volcano. Some holes offer strategic interest, including the first, where a shot to left side of the fairway offers a better appraoch to the green, but invites the bunkers lining the landing area on the left side. The dafer play is to hit it to the right where a big hill with catch ball and funnel them into the right center. The setting is spectacular. Some tees and greens offer great views. “Contoured and several multi-tiered/zoned greens set amidst an already hilly landscape (set in the mountains) added challenge for approach shots, short game, and putting. Aesthetics enhanced by a mixture of holes set in tree-lined corridors, others in open expanses with views of nearby meadows and dry lake beds, and holes that frame rock features and distant mountains. Greens were firm, receptive, and rolled true. Staff noted that multiple greens had been damaged by elk the night before this review round, which was ignored from the conditioning score (but perhaps added to the aesthetics/ambiance!)."

“Played this course 4 times over a 3 day stretch and loved it. The views were fantastic and it was in great shape even though the weather was cold and a little wet. I loved the design variety and the risk/reward features of several holes including 8, 9, 11, 16, and 18."
