Why Jason Day might not even win Australia's sportsman of the year award

September 10, 2015

Despite four victories, including a major, it doesn't appear Jason Day is going to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year Award. Incredibly, there's a good chance he won't be Australia's top athlete, either.

Fellow Aussie Jarryd Hayne has captivated his country with his quest to cross over from rugby to the NFL. So far, so good. Hayne had an impressive preseason, and he recently made the San Francisco 49ers' 53-man roster. No matter what the sport, clearly, the man knows how to run holding a ball. Here's a look at some of Hayne's highlights:

Day was asked about the battle for being named big man Down Under last week at the Deutsche Bank Championship:

"I'm not worrying about it right now," Day said. "I just have to focus on trying to win golf tournaments, trying to play good golf. At the end of the day, winning the award would be fantastic, but I have the opportunity to get to No. 1 this week if I can win."

Hayne is only listed as the 49ers' third-string running back and one of its three kick/punt returners for the team's season opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night. But something tells us Day will be one of the many Aussies tuned in to see his debut.
