Who needs Robin Williams when you've got Freddie?

October 07, 2009

U.S. Captain Fred Couples had talked about employing comedian Robin Williams to keep his team loose during Presidents Cup week, but, as Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press notes in this story, a comedian is wholly unnecessary.

Couples has a way with words that unintentionally is guaranteed to keep his players laughing. His sentences often detour from whatever point he was attempting to make and wind up in unexpected places.

"I can't wait to listen to him, his speeches, and see where they're going to go," Tiger Woods said. "When they start off one way, they never end up there. I think that's one of things that we're all going to have a good time with."

There, too, is the wisdom that he shares in a way that evokes Yogi Berra, such as this: "I think if we stay ahead every day we'll have a good shot at winning."

"You hit the nail on the head calling him the Yogi Berra of golf," Phil Mickelson said. "That's the kind of manager -- captain -- he'll be. I think it will be a fun week."
