Watch Phil Mickelson pull off a miraculous escape (shot) in the desert

February 04, 2021

The Phil Mickelson show is in Saudi Arabia this week instead of its typical showing at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. It doesn’t matter the country or the continent, though. Give the guy a chance to hit an escape shot from a desert lie and Mickelson will make magic.

Such was the case during the opening round of the Saudi International when the five-time major champ found himself in a tough spot after a wayward drive on the ninth hole. But Phil the Thrill responded with an incredible slicing iron shot that not only found the green, but also a ridge that funneled his ball to within 10 feet of the pin. Check it out:

Unfortunately for Phil, he couldn’t convert the birdie look. And at two under, he didn’t get off to the quickest start as he trails leader David Horsey by seven.

But we’re still giving the 50-year-old credit for hitting the shot of the day. When it comes to hitting recovery shots, you don't need to teach this old dog any new tricks. He already knows them all.
