Watch Matthew Fitzpatrick leave his putt for 59 just short, settle for 60

September 11, 2015

Matthew Fitzpatrick shot 60 on Friday during the second round of the European Tour's KLM Open. Time to celebrate, right?!

Well, not so fast.

When you have a chance to shoot the first-ever 59 in European Tour history, what's the one thing you can't do? Leave it short. Check out Fitzpatrick's birdie attempt on No. 18 that ended up inches short:

Of course, purists on Twitter were weighing in that it wouldn't count anyway since golfers at the event are playing preferred lies with muddy conditions at Kennemer Golf Club. After all, there were a pair of 61s shot on Thursday. Still, we're being a bit harsh on young Matt. A 60 is impressive no matter the circumstances -- and especially after doing this the day before.

The 60, not the shank, is more indicative of Fitzpatrick's play of late. The 2013 U.S. amateur champ is coming off a third-place finish at the Czech Masters, and he was runner-up at the OMEGA European Masters in July.
