Video: Fan yells "Fried chicken!" at Sergio Garcia
By Alex Myers
Sergio Garcia's wild week at Merion continued on Saturday before he even hit his opening tee shot. After being announced on the 11th tee to a mixed reaction from the gallery, a lone fan waited until it was silent before yelling, "Fried chicken!" -- a reference to Garcia's regrettable joke aimed at Tiger Woods last month.
CBS' Eye on Golf caught the moment with this clip from NBC's broadcast:
Unfortunately for Garcia, things got worse from there. Much, much worse.
On the par-4 15th, the hole he quadruple bogeyed on Thursday, Garcia hit three tee shots out-of-bounds left. By the time he holed out, he'd made a 10 to fall to last place among the 73 players qualifying for the weekend.
Garcia has been heckled at times by the Philly fans in his first tournament in the U.S. since his poor attempt at humor, which followed a public spat with Woods at the Players. He turned down a marshal's offer to have some removed on Thursday believing it would only make the situation worse.
Overall, Garcia described his reception as "Very good, for the most part." He'd probably characterize his play this week, in particular his 10 over performance on No. 15 thus far, a lot differently.
