U.S. Open 2025: Oakmont catches another body with Justin Thomas suffering two VIOLENT lip-outs
Patrick Smith
OAKMONT, Pa. — It's a foggy, gloomy and humind morning on Friday at the 125th U.S. Open, but that's hardly making the course play any easier. In fact, based on some of the lowlights from early in the second round, Oakmont seems to be playing even harder than it did on Thursday.
Look no further than the scorecard of Will Chandler, who went 6-6-8-6 out of the gate before finally making a par at the fifth. He's currently 12 over ... on the day, and he's hardly alone in getting punched in the mouth. Two-time PGA champion Justin Thomas, who opened with a six-over 76, was Oakmont's latest victim at the par-5 12th.
After a bogey at the 11th, his second hole of the second round, Thomas was on in regulation at No. 12, facing a 22-footer for birdie. He lagged it up to three feet, setting up what's normally a tap-in par. But this is not a normal course. Two VIOLENT lip-outs later, and Thomas had four-putted for a soul-crushing double bogey:
Not nice.
Barring a miracle, this could continue a troubling trend for JT in the major championships. Should he go on to miss the cut (he's now nine over for the championship), it would be his seventh missed cut in his last 11 majors. He did sprinkle in a top 10 at last year's PGA Championship at Valhalla, but failed to finish in the top 30 the other three times he made the weekend. This would also mark his third consecutive U.S. Open missed cut.
